The essential staples of every gentleman's wardrobe

Sometimes don’t you just wish you could Steve Jobs it and pull on a black skivvy, high-waisted blue jeans and a pair of white sneakers? Or Zuckerberg your style with an oversized grey Facebook hoodie and navy blue denim? You’ve probably seen the studies: some of the world’s most successful people wear the same thing every day. But where’s the fun in that? We believe that having a staple wardrobe limits to inform your choices, but each day doesn’t have to be a sartorial Groundhog Day if you want to make the big bucks.
A staple wardrobe comprises the essentials: suits, ties, shirts, shoes. It’s simple in its colour palette, not too fashion forward or retrospective, and classics you know you’ll wear ongoing. The staple should reflect your personal style and you shouldn’t feel as though you’re moulding to another’s prescription. There’s room to be yourself and have options to vary daily. So what should you consider?

A navy suit
Great for day-to-day wear, weddings and other formal affairs; perfect to mix and match. You can’t go wrong with a well-cut navy suit made to your measurements.

A grey suit
A smart alternative to black, a grey suit in a stunning cloth will cut your figure in the office.

A checked or pinstriped suit
Break up the monochrome with a little pattern: elegant pinstripes or checks in whatever form are a great look for all gentlemen.

White and blue shirts
You can never have too many white or blue shirts. Keep a running roster to wear during the week and no one will ever know you’re wearing the same shirt twice.

A sports jacket
A way to dress down for less formal affairs, though always keeping it together. Harris tweed, navy worsted wool with brass or horn buttons; a little of the English countryside is a tasteful addition.

An overcoat
An essential in winter, one great overcoat should last several seasons. Think durability and warmth, and choose high-end fabrics for something extra special.

A selection of textured ties
One of the nicest things about being a gent is having a tie collection. Store them in a drawer for an easy way to choose for your mood.

A white pocket square
A simple affectation, it goes with every suit colour and every tie. It’s a little trick to lift your look.

A pair of black shoes and a pair of brown shoes
High-polished, elegant in shape, and always high quality, shoes complete the look and are often the first thing others look at. Give your shoes the same attention you would your suit.
