Alexandre Rougeot - Founder and Director of Clos Cachet

Born to fifth generation vignerons in the famed village of Meursault, Burgundy, Rougeot’s story is somewhat of a wine fairy tale. Witnessing the beauty and challenge of winemaking firsthand, Alexandre fell in love with wine and developed a steadfast determination to continue and diversify the family tradition. His family Domaine, Domaine Rougeot, under the guidance of his father Marc, consistently produces outstanding wines with vineyards on renowned appellations including Meursault-Charmes, Pommard, Volnay-Santenots and Saint-Romain. Alexandre compliments his winemaking experience and deep passion for wine, with a Masters in Wine Marketing and Management (Bordeaux International Wine Institute), diverse experiences in management sales roles, and as a sommelier in France, the United States, China and Australia. In 2011, Alexandre became a Sales Supervisor for Altavis Fine Wine Importers in Shanghai. Starting with no clients, he grew his portfolio to include The Hilton Group, the Royal Meridien, Park Hyatt and the Ritz Carlton.

He then moved to Melbourne in 2012 and became a Key Account Manager for Craggy Range Australia, developing relationships with Melbourne’s most exclusive restaurants and bars. Alexandre was struck by the vibrance of Melbourne’s wine scene. He began to imagine a new platform for sharing his passion, his unique knowledge and the finest wines. Clos Cachet was born here in Melbourne and embodies Alexandre’s characteristic charisma and eye for quality. He is thrilled to be able to share the finest French wines, via his enviable professional network, direct to consumers.

What about French wines has you hooked?

I now have fourteen of the most amazing French wine producers from Champagne, Burgundy, Beaujolais, the Rhone Valley, the Loire Valley, Provence and Bordeaux. It includes producers such as Hudelot-Noellat, Petrus, Gripa, Henri Boillot, Tessier, Philippe Alliet, Samuel Billaud...

Briefly describe the different regions and why they are special?

The wines I import are from regions that are established and a true treasure for mankind. Champagne is the leading producer of top end sparkling wine and has a truly unique style that hasn’t been equalled to date. It is the same for Burgundy, Chablis, some parts of the Loire Valley like Pouilly-Fumé, some parts of Bordeaux like Pomerol and so on.

What do you offer that's truly unique?

I wanted to share my passion and connect Australian drinkers to exceptional French wines. With Clos Cachet it’s as if you were buying directly at the Domaine, you feel as if the producers’ fingerprints are still on the bottle.

I offer a direct access to some wines that money can’t buy. Because they are too rare and hard to get. However, I also work on bringing to my customers younger producers that I believe will get there and eventually won’t be accessible anymore.
