How-to: Dress for Autumn/Winter 2019

08 April 2019

"Not all fabrics are created equal – especially seasonal cloths that are woven with practicality in mind."

It’s that time again to turn over your wardrobe – linen and cotton suits to the back, worsted wools and lightweight flannels to the forefront.

Autumn is here – and while it’s time to park aside our linens and cottons, it’s tempting to look upon the cold weather ahead as a time for sartorial hibernation but that is not the case. Here at Oscar Hunt, we believe in clothing as self-expression and encourage our clients to continue doing so while embracing the low temperatures.

Autumn/Winter is all about working with tones

It’s easy to wear made-to-measure tailoring and we’ve identified three trends worth considering for the upcoming months:

New Autumn/Winter fabrics now available

Not all fabrics are created equal – especially seasonal cloths that are woven with practicality in mind. In partnership with French textiles Dormeuil, we’ve introduced new seasonal suiting fabrics now available in our Melbourne and Sydney showrooms.

Made in England, Dormeuil’s Tonik Wool is a collection of worsted wool cloths recognised for their crease-free qualities, natural stretch for comfort, and high-performance durability. It is also the ideal suit for modern lifestyles and business travellers.

Textured suits

Autumn and winter are good opportunities to explore suiting fabrics that complement the cooler seasons – think flannel, for instance, which is often favoured for its beautiful drape and more importantly, warmer than most of its worsted wool counterparts.

Given that men are often wearing navy or grey, what differentiates one man from another is the nuances of made-to-measure tailoring. Flannel suits are textured and contrast the slight sheen of other wools – pair this with neckties of softer colour palettes and bengal-striped shirts for a classic business-formal uniform.

An ode to colours and patterns

While spring/summer fabrics were bold, this season’s suits highlight sombre colours and stronger patterns. This includes midnight navy, charcoal grey, and chocolate brown as well as houndstooth and glen plaid – all of which are commonly associated and observed to echo the shade and cold weather in both autumn and winter.

Alternatively, opt for suits with subtle and understated patterns in sombre colours which work harmoniously well together and breathe new life into conservative offices without being too ostentatious at the same time.
