Winter warmers: How to keep some colour in the greyer months
You know it’s winter when the last brittle leaf falls to the rain-soaked ground and reflections in puddles reveal nothing but a grey sky. Sure it sounds melancholic, but winter doesn’t mean the end of colour nor the need for nihilistic poetry. Warm your winter wardrobe with some staples that will inject some life back into the season. It’s easier than you might think.
With winter comes layered dressing, so that means you can explore and expand your wardrobe quite simply. Scarves are an obvious choice for a pop of colour without going to much effort. While football colours are only allowed on match days, invest in some bright wool or cashmere scarves that complement your skin tone as well as your wardrobe. Play with different scarf lengths for different looks—a short scarf is a quick way to keep the cold out and can be knotted in a couple of ways, while a longer, oversized scarf gives you some bulk and proportion to play with, making it more of a statement piece.
Likewise woollen and cashmere knitwear can add more colour into your workwear. A coloured cardigan or vest worn over a shirt and tie under a blazer can have some retro cool, provided you get the colouring right. Or forgo the shirt and tie and wear a V-neck or turtleneck knit underneath your suit for some serious Bond-villan street cred.
As for your tailored suiting, darker wools can live a colourful life with a contrast check or stripe, such as brown with green or baby blue window pane checks, or navy and red. You can even rock tartan in a three-piece suit, thinking green, black and blue, or red and black. There are more fabrics that have winter tones with an edge that will make you stand out in a grim streetscape.
But it doesn’t stop there—bold overcoats are an exciting final addition to your wardrobe. Don’t settle for plain black or navy, incorporate checks or herringbones, or even a black-and-white houndstooth for a real statement piece that is guaranteed to catch others’ eyes. Brass button detailing will give coats a military aesthetic, while a fur collar will lend it some old-school glamour in a jaded world.
