Styling Bow Ties for Groomsmen: Modern Looks That Work

If ever you needed a reason to don a bow-tie, a wedding would have to be it. The ultimate finishing touch, this accessory has the ability to elevate the wearer and lend a sense of festive occasion to almost any wedding attire - from black-tie to even the more casual end of the spectrum.

This week, we’re diving into different bow tie wedding styles, with a specific focus on how you can best deck out your groomsmen so that they are looking their best on your big day.

Casual bow ties

While it’s unexpected, one of our favourite groomsmen bow tie ideas is using them to elevate more casual wedding dress codes. Not only does this make for a strong sense of contrast in the ensemble itself; it can also help distinguish members of a groom's party from other attendees at the wedding.

Of course, the craft is knowing how to wear a bow tie with a suit - particularly a more casual one. Our golden rule is to pay careful attention to the fabric weave of both the suit and the tie you choose to pair it with. Ideally, they should complement one another. So, for example, if your groomsmen are wearing linen suits, you may want to explore a linen or similar open weave fabric for the bowtie.

This ensures the look is cohesive and feels elevated while remaining on-brief.

Formal bow ties

For formal wedding attire in Australia, there’s simply no going past a black satin bow tie. The height of elegance and sophistication, there’s a good reason why this piece is a classic and we find grooms turning to it time and time again.

For maximum impact, we recommend pairing with a crisp white dinner shirt and black onyx shirt studs. The contrast of the black against white is particularly striking and shows both you and your groomsmen mean business.

If you’re looking to differentiate the wedding accessories of your groomsmen from yourself, you may like to explore the slightly left of centre (but undeniably classic) option of an ivory bow tie. This is an easy way to stand out and still stays strictly within the bounds of formal dress codes.

Bow ties with lounge suits

In between the very formal and the casual sits lounge attire. This generally speaks to a single breasted suit worn with a necktie or, in some instances, a bow tie. What’s wonderful about this dress code is that it allows you to really play with colour and texture. Think satin bow ties in vibrant prints or bolder colours than you would normally wear - the perfect way to call attention to groomsmen.
