Travel in Style: Tailoring Tips for Your Australian Holiday (or Xmas Break)

December is fast approaching which for most of us can only mean one thing: the Summer break is almost here. Yes. It’s the time of year when OOO is switched on, the office becomes a ghost town, and Australians flee en masse to the beach, the countryside or pretty much anywhere that isn’t a CBD.

But just because we’re relaxed over this period doesn’t mean our wardrobe necessarily matches. Summer holidays often come with more formal occasions woven in too - from weddings to dressy New Year’s eve soirees. And what that means is that many will need to pack a made-to-measure Australian suit alongside their boardies.

It’s a task that’s easier said than done and that’s why we’re bringing you our Oscar Hunt men’s vacation style guide to tailoring.

What suits to pack

When it comes to travel, not all suits are made equal and some are better built for the road than others. So, if you are needing to pack a suit for the Summer break, our advice is to opt for one that is more durable. This means looking for travel suits for men that are made from harder wearing fabrics like wool or blends that are more crease resistant (for example, a linen silk blend versus a pure linen).

Being smart about the suits you choose will save you time once you arrive at your destination and also reduce the risk of doing any material damage to your suit.

How to transport tailoring

So, you’ve chosen your suit. What next? Packing tailored suits for travel is an artform in and of itself. But with a few easy steps, you can make it a breeze. The first is to use a suit bag. While it can feel like a hassle adding another piece of luggage to the mix, a suit bag will prevent your garment from getting dirty and also help to maintain the structure of the jacket.

If you’re flying, we recommend transporting the suit bag as hand luggage and placing it on top of another bag in the overhead locker to stop it from being squashed by anything heavy.

Suit care on arrival

Once you’ve arrived at your destination, chances are that the suit will be a little wrinkled from the journey. Whatever you do though, resist the urge to use the hotel iron. This can damage the fabric irreparably and risk creating those dreaded shiny patches. Instead, we advise hanging your suit up in the bathroom, turning the shower to hot and letting the room steam up. This will naturally relax any major creases and is an easy way to refresh the suit before an event.
