Suit Care Tips for Humid & Hot Weather: Keep It Crisp All Day

If there are two things that are nearly guaranteed over Summer in Australia it’s that the weather will be warm, and that you’ll need to dress up for at least one formal occasion. While you’d be forgiven for wanting to spend December to February in a pair of board shorts, every now and then duty calls. And when it does, it pays to be prepared. Here, we’ve compiled our comprehensive Oscar Hunt care guide for tailored suits in Australia - particularly when the mercury spikes.

Let’s dive in!

Cleaning

The first of our suit care tips is focused on cleaning and, more specifically, why dry cleaning is a last resort. While it might feel counterintuitive, suits should ideally be spot cleaned as much as possible, with dry cleaning only used occasionally. This is because the chemicals used in the process can damage the fibre of suit fabrics, resulting in premature wear and tear. You’ll often see this show up as shiny patches on a suit.

So, what’s the alternative? If your suit is marked, we recommend cleaning with a damp cloth and a horsehair brush. The combination of these tools should remove any superficial marks and help preserve the fabric and lining.

Transport & Storage

Given we’re focused on suit care over Summer - a time when Australians are often on the move - we also wanted to touch on how to get suits from point A to point B. The best thing that you can do is keep your suit on a structured hanger (one that has thicker shoulders) and keep it in a cotton suit bag. The hanger will ensure that the jacket maintains its shape and structure while the cotton suit bag allows the fabric to breathe while also protecting it during travel.

When you arrive at your destination, unfold the suit bag and keep the suit on the hanger. This will help any creases drop out naturally.

Steaming

Suit maintenance in humid weather can feel a little like Mission Impossible. And we get it. You're sweaty. Suits are more likely to crumple. It’s tricky. So, what’s the antidote? Steaming. Gentle while also helping to remove odours and creases, this is the perfect way to keep a suit looking fresh regardless of the weather.

If you don’t have access to a steamer, we suggest hanging your suit in the bathroom and running a hot shower with the door closed. The steam from the water will help the fabric fibres relax and give your suit a nice little refresh.
