Weekend Style in Winter: The Art of Dressing Warm Without Looking Bulky

Dressing for the weekend is one of life’s great pleasures. With virtually unlimited options and no strict dress codes to abide by, these are the two days of the week where you can truly afford to play with your wardrobe and try on outfits that feel the most ‘you’. And this is even more the case during the cooler months where accessories, coats and thicker, cosier fabrics come into play. The only challenge? Bulk. All too often we’ve come across the perfect Winter coat only to find that it runs a little snug when it’s layered over a certain sweater or we’ve inadvertently made ourselves look a little top heavy in the pursuit of warmth.

No more though! This week, we’re sharing the Oscar Hunt guide to men’s Winter weekend style. Let’s dive in!

Winter wardrobe essentials

No casual Winter style guide for men would be complete without covering off the basics. And for us, that really boils down to three key pieces: a mid-blue wash pair of jeans, a fine knit and a proper jacket. What we love about these items is that they can be mixed and matched in dozens of ways throughout the season to deliver a truly versatile range of outfits.

Now, while you can easily get by with just these few pieces, for those who are looking to bolster their wardrobe, there are also some more tailored casual wear pieces for Winter to consider. Key amongst them is the casual blazer. Available in a range of fabrics, we find ourselves inevitably drawn to richer, more textured cloth like tweed or corduroy at this time of year. Thrown over a shirt, sweater and jeans, this is an effortless way to elevate an otherwise more casual look.

In a similar vein, adding a pair of tailored chinos to your rotation can also assist in levelling up your Winter weekend wardrobe and is particularly handy for more semi-formal occasions like heading out to a restaurant or going to the theatre. We generally advise opting for darker colours which are versatile and generally pair well with a Winter palette.

Winter styling advice

So far we’ve covered off what to wear but haven’t gone into all that much detail on how. And more specifically, we haven’t addressed the critical question of how to dress warmly without looking bulky. The trick is wearing thinner layers.

In practice, this means wearing singlets underneath shirts, fine knits underneath jackets and ensuring that any outerwear that you purchase has sufficient room to fit everything underneath. The benefit of dressing this way is not only that it eliminates that bulky look but also that you can moderate your body temperature in increments.
