The Anatomy of the Perfect Tuxedo (and Why Off-the-Rack Won’t Do)
There really is no better garment to epitomise elegance in the Australian male wardrobe than the custom tuxedo. Subtle, timeless and a true investment piece, this is an ensemble that effortlessly elevates the wearer and lends a sense of occasion whenever it’s worn. However, not all tailored tuxedo suits are made equal and there are key elements that indicate a truly well-made version.
Here, we dive into the specifics of exactly what makes a perfect tuxedo and the details that you should look out for to ensure that your tux is the perfect fit.

The fit
The clue for spotting a made to measure tuxedo lies in the name itself - this is a garment that is customised to your unique measurements and it should fit accordingly. Here at Oscar Hunt, we pride ourselves on our attention to detail, taking dozens of measurements in your initial consultation to ensure that the finished product not only fits but truly flatters your body. The end result should be a tailored dinner suit that wears evenly around your body and moves with you.

The style
The key thing that demarcates a tuxedo from a normal suit is the lapel. Traditionally done in satin, dinner suits can have either a shawl or peak lapel, the satin contrasting against the wool body of the garment. Some of the other, less obvious details include satin covered buttons and a satin stripe down the side of the trouser leg.
From a fit perspective, tuxedos generally mimic the cut of your regular suit. However, to ensure that your tux remains genuinely timeless, we advise opting for a slightly looser and more classic cut.

The colour
You may well be reading this thinking, ‘what the hell do they mean ‘colour’?’ And it’s a fair question. For the most part, tuxedos are crafted in black which is both a chic and universally flattering shade. However, it’s not the only option.
For those who are looking to be a little bolder with their evening attire, the two other options that we always suggest are either midnight blue (a fun fact; the original tuxedos were made in a this inky colour), or, during the warmer months, you might even opt for an ivory jacket.

The finishing touches
A tuxedo is only complete with the addition of small but crucial accessories. This includes shirt studs, cufflinks and, of course, a bow-tie. Our guidance is always to lean towards the classics which means either onyx or mother of pearl hardware and a black satin bow-tie. Cap this off with a pair of patent leather dinner shoes and you’re ready to roll.
