Winter Suiting Essentials: Embracing Texture and Color
While it might not be a popular opinion, we here at Oscar Hunt are quite partial to a spot of chilly weather. It’s an opportunity to get cozy, indulge in hearty food and crack open the occasional bottle of red, but even more than that, it’s a chance to truly lean into the full spectrum of fabrics and styles that we have to choose from.
And that’s exactly what we’re discussing today; unpacking the fundamentals of Winter tailored suits so that you can be set up for the season (and for many seasons to come.)

Best suits for Winter in Australia
Let’s start with style. While there are no hard and fast rules, during Winter we generally find ourselves dabbling with a mixture of both single and double-breasted suiting. While it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, there’s something irresistible about a slightly oversized double-breasted jacket wrapping around you during the cooler months.
And speaking of fit, our recommendation is to always opt for a slightly looser cut for Winter to ensure that you have sufficient room to layer a fine knit should you need to.
While suiting is somewhat immune to the movement of trends, in 2025 we’re seeing an increase in popularity of more relaxed silhouettes that throw back to 1940s style tailoring. And while these cuts are looser, they’re never baggy - accented by defined waists and shoulders.

Best colours for Winter suits
Traditionally, tailored Winter suits have skewed towards the darker end of the colour spectrum with a lot of grey, charcoal and black. These shades are classics for a reason and there are multiple ways to shake them up if you’re not interested in a block colour. A key example is patterns like houndstooth or Prince of Wales check which add a little extra nuance to your Winter outfits.
On the other end of the spectrum, warmer shades have been experiencing renewed popularity since the start of the year. Specifically, we’ve been seeing a lot of brown, camels and even burgundy in tailoring which injects a pop of colour into the Winter wardrobe. This is a particularly good option for those who find that cooler shades like black or grey wash them out.
Best winter suit fabrics
In terms of fabric, we’re always drawn to more textural fabrics in Winter that evoke warmth. Some of our favourites include flannel, cashmere and tweed. All of these are wonderfully tactile and clearly demarcate your Winter suit from those you might wear transeasonally.
Flannel in particular is a vastly underrated fabric that looks particularly smart when done as a double breasted suit. We’re especially big fans of a pin stripe flannel as the stripe itself gets slightly smudged by the fibres of the fabric, creating a soft overall aesthetic that contrasts the harshness of Winter.
